Taipei

Taiwan is an island in the Pacific Ocean, located off the coast of southeastern China.  A substantial portion of Taiwan is covered by a mountainous topography and the terrain is used to cultivate the highest quality green tea.  Taipei, the capital city of Taiwan, is a high-tech metropolis with a vibrant culture and beautiful nature.  The culture and culinary scene of Taiwan were deeply influenced by the colonial empires of Portugal and Japan.  Diverse districts of Taipei have a number of attractions.  Our multi-day trip to Taipei explores the Hot Springs of Beitou, a long tradition preserved throughout the history of Taiwan.  The Beitou District has several cultural places, influenced by the Japanese Empire.  The Taiwan Folk Arts Museum showcases the simplicity of the Japanese architecture.  The museum has a lovely collection of Taiwan’s folk art.  The Thermal Valley, situated at the foothill of Yang Ming Mountain, is a source of Green Sulfur Hot Springs.  It is a relaxing space with volcanic terrain, lush vegetation and hot springs, featuring a collection of hotels and guest houses.  The Thermal Valley is an ideal destination to rejuvenate and relax.

Giant Pandas

In southern Taipei, the Wenshan District has number of attractions.  The Maokong Gondola, located a short distance from the Taipei Zoo, overlooks the mountains and the city, arriving to the Maokong area.  A highlight of the Wenshan District is the Taipei Zoo that spans over 400 acres of terrain and features magnificent wildlife from around the world.  It is here that we encounter for the first time the Giant Pandas.  We spend a few hours at the zoological garden, watching the Giant Pandas constantly eating bamboo.  The Giant Panda, native to Southwest China, is easily recognized by its white and black coloring and distinct black circles around the eyes.  The Giant Panda is a species of bears, but unlike other bears, it has a pseudo thumb used to hold bamboo when feeding. The panda’s digestive system enables only the digestion of bamboo’s sugar and protein; hence, the panda needs to eat large quantities of bamboo.  The mountain ranges in south-central China are a native habitat of the Giant Panda.  There, the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, located in Sichuan Province, recreates the natural habitat of the giant pandas. It is an exceptional destination to see the majestic adult pandas and adorable and playful giant panda cubs. At the Chengdu Research Center, the Bashania Fargesii (Bamboo species) is the primary food source, very nutritious and flavorful.
