Port Lockroy, a Historic British Base in Antarctica

The Antarctic Peninsula, a long mountain chain in the northern part of Antarctica, is an extraordinary cruise destination.  During the Antarctic Summer, we visit Port Lockroy, a historic British base located on Goudier Island in Antarctica.  The base at Port Lockroy was established in 1944 by the Royal Navy’s Operation Tabarin, symbolizing Britain’s presence in Antarctica.  The Antarctic base includes the “Bransfield House”, the main building that served as a home and a laboratory.  Surrounded by spectacular scenery, Port Lockroy is designated as a Historic Site and Monument, and serves as a museum and a post office.
